No full-fledged BNP body in Kishoreganj for over 11 years

Some senior leaders, seeking anonymity, told this correspondent that because of absence of a full-fledged committee, many party leaders are now misusing party power and engaged in arms and drug trafficking, land grabbing, extortion, tender manipulation and other illegal activities. Most of the party workers are now frustrated, they said.

Party high command dissolved two years ago the district BNP convening committee which ran the unit for about a decade.

It formed a temporary committee jointly led by Education Minister Dr M Osman Faruq and former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Waliullah Rabbani as president and secretary on June 20 last year and asked them to form a full-fledged committee.

But Dr Faruq was pre-occupied as a minister and Rabbani was 'too junior' to become general secretary of the committee, according to party leaders. They suggested for selection of a senior leader for the post.

Besides, Housing and Public Works Minister Mirza Abbas has strong hold in district administration and local politics as he is minister-in-charge of the district.

At present, the party is divided into three groups, one led by Dr M Osman Faruq, another by Mirza Abbas and the third one by Waliullah Rabbani, a prominent leader.

According to Ataur Rahman Khan, a former BNP lawmaker, most of the senior leaders are now inactive and party feud has spread to the level of thana committees.

The district committee dissolved Hussainpur thana committee on November 27 last year but its secretary Rafiqul Islam is still holding the post.

When contacted, Rafiq said he is continuing his job as per instruction of minister Mirza Abbas.
