Protest against attack on temple

Dinajpur police yesterday arrested one person in connection with the damage of an idol of a Hindu godess at a temple in Birganj upazila Saturday midnight.

The arrestee is Md. Joynal, son of Kalu Mohammad of Gopalpur village in the upazila.

Police said some miscreants numbering about 25 attacked the temple at Mankirra village and damaged the idol.

Thousands of Hindu community people brought out a protest procession and laid a siege to the UNO office, demanding arrest of the culprits.

Birganj police said Zateen Chandra Roy, general secretary of the temple, committee filed a case with on Monday accusing four people.

The Dinajpur unit of Hindu, Buddha Christian Oikkya Parishad in a statement protested the incident and demand arrest of the culprits.

Birganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Abdul Mannan visited the area and assured the Hindu community people of arrest and punishment of the attackers.
