May 25 will be a memorable day for Nazrul fans in Trishal. Kazi Nazrul Islam University will be opened at Nampara near the banyan tree under which boy Nazrul used to play flute.

Kazi Nazrul Islam University would be first university in the country which will be a centre for study and development of traditional culture along with courses on other subjects, sources said.

Established on 16 acres of land, the university will start functioning from 2006-2007 academic session with Bengali and English, music, computer science and engineering subjects.

A total of 200 students will be admitted in the first session, with a plan to enroll 2250 students in graduation and post-graduation levels in Arts, Science, Business Administration and Law faculties in future.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is expected to inaugurate academic activities at the university on Thursday. She will also open the national level programmes at Trishal, marking the poet's 107th birth anniversary celebrations. The prime minister had laid the foundation of Kazi Nazrul Islam University on March 1 last year.

Greater Mymensingh Cultural Forum (GMCF) first took the initiative in 1997 to establish an university after National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Dr Ashraf Siddiquee, an eminent folklore researcher, Hamida Ali, former principal of Vikharu Nisa Noon School and College and Mahmud Sajjad, Executive President of GMCF played a pioneer role in setting up the university.

Education Minister Dr M. Osman Faruq visited the university on May 11.

The people of Trishal as well as of Mymensingh district are very happy that a university is finally coming into being after Nazrul who stayed at Trishal for about a year.

Kazi Rafizuddin, a police sub-inspector, then posted at Asanshole in West Bengal, took Nazrul to his Darirampur village home in Trishai in 1914 (Bangla Year 1320).

Nazrul was admitted to class seven in Darirampur High School. Later he shifted his lodging to the house of one Bechutia Bepari at Trishal Namapara. But after the school annual examination, he left Trishal.
