Nolka-Panggashi flood protection dam opens soon

The Nolka-Panggashi road cum flood protection dam on the western bank Fuljor river, a Jamuna tributary, is nearing completion. It will be opened before the ensuing monsoon.

The project will fulfil a long cherished desire of about five lakh people of Raiganj and Sirajganj Sadar Upazilas.

They had been demanding construction of the flood protection dam to protect lands and homesteads in 50 villages from recurring floods and erosion by Fulzor river.

Besides controlling floods and erosion, the dam cum road will provide direct road link between Raiganj upazila headquarters and Ullapara and between Sirajganj Sadar and Kamarkahnda upazila headquarters.

The project has been completed by Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) at a cost of Tk 80.16 lakh. The work was started on May 25 last year.

During a recent visit, LGED Executive Engineer MD Khurshid Hasan told newsmen that the road cum flood protection dam would protect thousands of dwelling houses and business establishments from floods and erosion and serve as a good road link in the area.
