Flood situation worsens in three districts

Our Netrakona Correspondent reports: About two lakh people were marooned in 200 villages of Durgapur, Kalmakanda, Mohongonj, Madan and Khaliajuri upazilas, sources in the Water development Board (WDB) said.

Water coming from the hills of the neighbouring India and heavy rain during last four days have aggravated the situation.

Water level in the Sumeshowary, Mogra, Kongsha and Dhanu marked a sharp rise. Water is flowing above the danger level resulting in overflowing of the river banks at different places.

Kalmakanda, Khaliajuri and Mohonganj upazila headquarters have been inundated and gone under four to five feet water. Most of the houses in the upazila headquarters were flooded.

Aman seedlinga and vegetables on hundreds of acres of land have been damaged. About 2000 ponds overflowed in Kalmakanda, Durgapur, Madan, Mohongonj and Khaliajuri upazilas. As a result, fishes worth about Tk 20 crore have been washed away, sources in the district fisheries office said.

Road communication from Netrakona town to Durgapur upazila Sadar, Kalmakanda upazila Sadar, Kendua upazila Sadar and Madan upazila headquarter has been snapped due to submersion of roads.

A large number of people took shelter on higher lands.

Scarcity of drinking water is prevailing in the affected areas.

Our Moulvibazar Correspondent reports: Flood situation deteriorated further in Baralekha and Juri upazilas as the low-lying areas went under water. More than, one lakh 20 thousand people remained still marooned since Friday.

Scarcity of dry food and pure drinking water is prevailing in the flood affected areas. Diarrhea has been broken out in Juri and Baralekha areas.

Ten out of 16 unions of Juri and Baralekha upazilas were inundated by flood. About 70 villages in Juri upazila and 50 villages in Baralekha upazila were affected by flood. Poschim Juri, Sujanagar, Dokkinbagh, Jayfarnagar, Hakaluki, Daserbazar, Talimpur, Gazurtek, Borni and Kataltoli unions were flooded.

Flood victims alleged that no relief goods or medical teams reached the affected areas as yet. Although Juri Upazila Nirbahi Officer announced allocation of four metric ton of rice to the each flood victim, but they did not receive rice even after three days of announcement.

Roadside earth collapsed stretching 42-kilometre areas on the Baralekha-Changram regional highway. Road communication in Baralekha and Juri upazilas still remain disrupted. Juri-Fultala, Juri-Latitila and Baralekha-Kulaura roads are still now under water. Most of the primary and high schools in Juri and Baralekha upazilas remained closed for the third consecutive day. Most of the growth centres were inundated resulting stoppage in trade and commercial activities.

Our Staff Correspondent reports from Sylhet: New areas have been inundated in Jakiganj, Golapganj, Balaganj and Rajnagar.

Gushing waters continued to enter the villages through six breaches along the Surma dyke and Kushiyara dyke in Jakiganj upazila yesterday afternoon.

All the rivers are still flowing above the danger level till yesterday afternoon, said WDB officials.

Sylhet WDB superintending engineer said the situation is yet to be improved due to onrush of water from the upper catchment of the Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya.

WDB personnel are working round the clock to repair two damaged dykes.

In Golapganj upazila, 10 families were rendered homeless due to erosion by the Kushiyara. The Upazila Nirbahi Officer visited some of the affected areas. But, no food was allocated for the flood victims.

The low-lying areas in the Beanibazar, Gowainghat, Jaintapur, Kanaighat, Companiganj, Jakiganj and Sylhet Sadar upazilas are still under water.

Road link between Gowainghat upazila and the district headquarters remained snapped for the 7th day yesterday due to submersion of the Sari-Gowainghat Road.

Stone collection from the quarries remained suspended for the 8th day yesterday in Companyganj and Gowainghat upazilas.
