Punishment to killers of landless demanded

Hundreds of landless people including a large number of women yesterday brought out a procession here protesting killing of Abul Hossain Sardar, a landless man, by a group of miscreants on June 3.

The processionists paraded the main streets of the town and submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police (SP) to press home their 4- point demand.

The demands include arrest and punishment to the killers, compensation to the deceased and the injured, withdrawal of Kaliganj Police Station officer-in- charge (OC) Ansar Uddin and sub-inspector (SI) Akkaj for their negligence of duties and rehabilitation of evicted landless people.

The procession was preceded by a meeting held at Shaheed Abdur Razzak Park. Organised by Satkhira Landless Eviction Resistance Struggle Co-ordination Committee, the meeting was chaired by its convenor Advocate Abdur Rahim.

Speakers demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to the killers. They threatened a tougher agitation against the government if their demands are not fulfilled within seven days of its announcement.

They called upon the people of all walks of life to build up a joint agitation against the land grabbers.

They urged the political parties to incorporate the issue of the landless into the party manifesto.

They also demanded of the government to rehabilitate the landless evicted from their houses at Bairagirchak, Bosukhali, Chingrikhali, Gava, Shimulbaria and other areas.

Among others, Prof Abu Ahmed, Advocate Mustafa Lutfullah, Saifullah Laskar, Obaidus Sultan Bablu, Abul Khair, Ohab Ali Sardar, Abdul Bari, Faizul Islam, Mafizul Haque Zahangir, Kazi Akhter Hossain and Advocate Fahimul Haque Kislu addressed.
