Vigilance heightened in B'baria border area

Import of chicks through Akhaura land port and smuggling through the border has been totally stopped, sources in BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) and the district administration told this correspondent yesterday. Germicide is applied to all vehicles entering Bangladesh.

Alongside, the district administration has launched an awareness campaign among poultry firm owners in the district not to allow Indian chicks into their firms.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidur Rahman at a meeting formed vigilance teams in all the upazilas led by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and he upazila livestock officer to check inflow of Indian chicks. A district monitoring committee has been formed to supervise activities of the vigilance teams. The upazila committees have launched an awareness campaign about bird flu, sources at the DC office said yesterday.

Checking at Agartala land port has been made rigorous. Germicide is applied to all vehicles entering Bangladesh. This is being done by the Akhaura upazila committee headed by the UNO Khaled Perves Khan.

The vigilance and rigorous checking will continue till bird flu is eradicated in Agartala, he told this correspondent.
