Police, BGB and Ansar asked to prepare for local polls

Three political parties registered with the Election Commission last year have violated its rules by failing to submit their annual audit reports, while four others registered in earlier years have also failed to comply.

The Election Commission plans to begin local government elections in the first week of October, starting with the haor and northeastern districts -- Sunamganj, Netrokona, Kishoreganj and parts of Habiganj.

Candidates must be at least 35, secure the support of two MPs and submit nomination papers by August 13

Twenty-seven of the 50 parties that contested February’s general election reported zero campaign expenditure, according to filings submitted to the Election Commission (EC).

The Election Commission is planning to hold the next presidential election in the last week of August to elect the head of state.

The government has handed out contractual appointments to 12 BNP leaders and activists across key entities, including the Election Commission, despite its manifesto pledge to prevent the politicisation of institutions and strengthen their independence.
