UIU receives EPSRC Fund to install Nano-grids in Bangladesh and Kenya

United International University (UIU) recently received Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (UK) fund for its role in “Solar Nano-grids as an appropriate sustainable solution to the limitations of solar home systems in rural communities in Kenya and Bangladesh.” UIU is working on the project along with its partners Loughborough University (UK) and INTASAVE, Kenya.
UIU will lead the design and implementation of Solar Nano-grids project in Kenya and Bangladesh. The goal of the project is to supply a small cluster of households (15-20) in the off-grid area with electricity for household usage and other activities like small irrigation pumps. The project will also study the socio-economic impacts of solar nano-grid and the problems associated with the sustainability of such projects.
The kick-off meeting of the project was held in UK in December 2013 and the follow-up meeting of the project and a workshop on Nano-grid was held from May 6-9 in Nairobi, Kenya.
