The Annual Show at Sir John Wilson School
Life without feasts and celebrations is insipid. Same is true in case of school life. Annual shows add colour to school life. The annual show is a part of Sir John Wilson School's extracurricular activity in which all students participate and parents are invited to be a part of the celebration.
The Annual Show 2014-15 for Middle Section and Early Section was held on December 5 and 6 at the school premises in Baridhara J-Block, Dhaka. The show began with the opening speech by Nasreen Subhan, School Director. She introduced the new Principal Brig. Gen. Mirza T.H. Beg (Retd) to the parents. The Principal addressed the parents, thanking them for attending the show and encouraging their children. At the Annual Show, students of every class participated in a variety of items such as dance, song, drama, poetry recitation and playing musical instruments like the piano. A highlight of the event was a heart-rending drama depicting the Liberation War.
The way all the class teachers guided and inspired their students during their performances was commendable. Parents' support made the event possible. They spent valuable time to get their children ready with beautiful costumes, and attended the event which was a source of great encouragement to all.
The Annual Show is a platform where the students find an outlet for their latent talents. It enables them to demonstrate their promise in areas other than in academia.

SUMAIYA T AHMED
Imagine yourself among the most brilliant minds in Bangladesh, coming together in a serene tea resort in Srimangal, Sylhet. You are joined by 100 of the best and the brightest students in Bangladesh. Everyone's dreams, goals, and aspirations are different, yet the aim is to achieve greatness in each and every work is the same. You listen to the people around you, and you are blown away with their perspectives and ideas. This is just the beginning of four days of inspiration. The 'Youth Leadership Bootcamp 2015' – from February 23 to 27 – will bring together 100 of the brightest university students for four days of team building activities, expert panel sessions, outdoor excursions, and reflection sessions.
Every year, over 1.8 million people enter the job market and compete for 20,000 jobs. Just a degree from a university is not enough to get you the job that you want. One needs to stand out from the crowd with the right skills. Demonstrating teamwork, leadership abilities, critical thinking, negotiation and communication skills are not optional anymore. With this idea in mind, BYLC launched its first Bootcamp with 100 participants from around the country. This year, 100 more undergraduate students will convene for intense training. The first two days will see students go through an inspiring self-reflective journey through game-based activities and small group discussion. Different theories of leadership and diagnostic tools will be explored, and the dynamics of change and mobilising people to overcome difficult challenges will be discussed. On day three, participants will be going on an exciting excursion to the public, private, and non-profit sectors to see real world challenges, which should help them to take back invaluable industry knowledge. They will also have an opportunity to interact with the management and staff from different sectors, which should help them understand the work process better and broaden their networks. The final day will equip students with skills needed to write an effective cover letter and resume, and to face interviews. They will also draft a personal and professional action plan, where they will outline their goals for themselves for the future. This action plan will be mailed back to them after six months as a reminder of their aspirations.
Throughout the four days, students will be mentored by highly trained professionals, including Ejaj Ahmad, the Founder and President of BYLC. The Bootcamp will also offer students to interact with industry leaders such as Kamal Qadir, CEO of Bkash and Geeti Ara Safia Chowdhury, Chairman, Adcomm Limited, and learn about what they will need for the job market. After the four days of self-exploration and personal development, students should have an increased understanding on how to effectively exercise leadership, and come up with innovative approaches to problem solving. They will also be equipped with improved teamwork and communication skills, as well as taking away a clearer understanding of industry norms and practices.
Deadline to apply for the Bootcamp is January 7, 2015.
The writer is a Communication Officer at BYLC.
