Ecnec approves 9 projects of Tk 5,239.62cr
The expenditure of Bangladesh Economic Zones Development Project (1st phase) has increased to Tk 904.75 crore after being revised for the third time.
The project had been approved initially with Tk 81.95 crore for January 2016 to June 2016 with an additional cost of Tk 40.39 crore after the first revision.
The cost of the project shot up when it had revised for the second time with an additional cost of Tk 780 crore and finally, it stood at Tk 986.70 crore in the third revision.
The long-term objective of the project has been taken to attract foreign and local investors and entrepreneurs through creating a business-friendly environment in the areas of Bangladesh Economic Zones (BEZs).
However, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) cancelled a project of Tk 17,290.23 crore designed to provide Khichuri or other foods as midday meals to the students of primary schools.
"The project has not been approved as the prime minister is concerned about its structure (modus operandi). She said cooking Khichuri in the schools might hamper the study of students," said Planning Minister MA Mannan while briefing reporters after the Ecnec meeting held at the NEC conference room in the city.
In addition, the Ecnec has approved nine projects, involving around Tk 5,239.62 crore. Among the nine approved projects, six are fresh projects while three others are revised ones.
Of the total, Tk 5,439 crore will be used from the government fund, while the rest from foreign sources.
The decision was taken at a meeting at the NEC conference room with Prime Minister and Ecnec Chairperson Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The prime minister joined the meeting through a video conference from her official residence Gono Bhaban.
