Unb, Dhaka

A mobile court assisted by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday jailed 16 brokers, including eight women, for cheating patients at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor), known as Pangu Hospital.

A team of Rab-2, led by its Assistant Superintendent of Police M Shahidul Islam, detained the brokers when they were involved in cheating patients. Later, executive magistrate Md Helal Uddin gave them different prison terms ranging from seven days to six months, said Rab sources.

The brokers used to lure patients of Pangu Hospital to private clinics offering "better" treatment at a cheaper rate for taking commission from the clinic owners, said a Rab official.  Later, the patients are provided with poor treatment facilities at the clinics, he said.

The convicts are Md Majnu Khan, Md Nazim Md Al Amin, Md Rezaul Karim, Md Sumon, Md Siddique, Md Mukarram Hossain, Md Ali, Md Rubel Pradhan, Sharmin, Reshma, Shahana, Ratna Rani Das, Kalpana, Aziran, Marzina Sharmin and Md Shahidul Islam.
