50 tonnes of cosmetics seized at Ctg port

Customs officials in Chattogram yesterday seized three containers of cosmetics weighing 50 tonnes, imported after declaring them as plough for cultivating agricultural land. Officials said the cosmetics are worth around Tk 2.5 crore.

For plough, the tax rate is only one percent, while for cosmetics, it ranges from 89 to 131 percent, they said.

Dhaka-based trader Saleha Trading had declared 30 tonnes of plough from Singapore, which  arrived in Chattogram Port on January 19 this year. Rezaul Karim, assistance commissioner of customs, said after finding the containers full of cosmetics, they and conducted a physical search.
