6 robbers imprisoned for life

A Dhaka court today sentenced six robbers to life imprisonment for looting a car and various valuable goods worth Tk 21 lakh of Supreme Court lawyer Golam Kibria in March 2014.

Judge Dr Sheikh Golam Mahbub of Special Judge Court-6 of Dhaka delivered the verdict and fined each convict Tk 10,000 or additional six months in prison.

The convicts are Noor Alam alias Habu, Md Nazrul Islam alias Tuhin, Md Mannan, Khokon Chandra Biswas, Md Kamal Munshi and Shofiqul Islam alias Sazal.

After the cross-examination of all fifteen prosecution witnesses, the judge handed down the sentence in presence of the convicts, now in jail.

According to the prosecution, it was alleged that a group of robbers led by Noor Alam intercepted the car of Golam Kibria in the capital’s Hatirjheel around 4:15am on March 14, 2014 while Kibria along with his three junior female colleagues were returning their residences in Gulshan after counting the votes of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

On that day, Golam Kibria filed a robbery case with Tejgaon Industrial Police Station against three unknown people.

The robbers also looted all the valuable goods including gold ornaments and snatched away the car. After the incident, the robbers also attempted to commit another robbery, but police arrested three robbers with the car.

Later, police arrested three others in connection with the case and recovered the looted goods from their possession.

On July 8, 2014, Mahbub-ur-Rashid, a police inspector of detectives, submitted the charge sheet to the court accusing six robbers.

During the investigation, five of the accused gave confessional statements to the magistrates on different dates.

On October 27, 2014, the court framed charges against all the six accused.
