Addl SP’s wife alleges torture for dowry

Wife of an additional superintendent of police (Addl SP) yesterday brought allegation of torture against her husband for dowry.

Nusrat Jahan made the allegations soon after her family members rescued her from the residence of her husband's sister in Munshiganj.

"My mobile phone was snatched away. I was not allowed to communicate with my parents. I was held captive," Nusrat told The Daily Star yesterday over phone.

She also alleged that her husband -- Sheikh Abdullah Bin Kalam -- and his family members used to rebuke her all the time. She said Abdullah often beat and tortured her.

Failing to contact her daughter, Nusrat's mother Sultana Khatun lodged a general diary (GD) with Kushtia Model Police Station on Wednesday.

In the GD, she alleged that Abdullah used to torture her daughter physically and mentally since their marriage. She further alleged that they could not contact Nusrat since she went to her husband's house on September 11 from their Kushtia home on Abdullah's return from abroad.

Nusrat had been living with her parents for the last one year after Abdullah went to the UK on a one-year study, she mentioned in the GD.

"Under this circumstance, my daughter's life can be endangered," the GD reads.

Talking to The Daily Star, Nusrat said her family arranged her marriage with Abdullah, a 29th BCS police officer, in 2016. "My husband often beat me as my father could not give him a flat and car," she alleged.

Two pictures of Nusrat that this newspaper obtained show marks of bruises on her arms. Asked, she said the pictures were taken around a year ago.

Md Touhidul Islam, a brother-in-law of Nusrat who rescued her, said they will first admit her to a hospital and then will file a case.

Despite repeated attempts, Abdullah could not be contacted for comments on his cellphone. He also did not reply to the text messages sent to him.

Contacted, M Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station, said they are looking into the matter.
