Two Awami League-backed candidates and one rebel contestant of the party were elected councillors in three wards under Dhaka South City Corporation where three centres saw re-voting yesterday.

Sultan Miah and Noor Hossain won in ward 8 and 53, while rebel candidate Mir Samir won in 34.

Polling at the three centres -- Kamalapur Sher-e-Bangla High School in ward 8, Jurain Ashraf Master Adarsha Uchcha Bidyalaya in ward 53, and Suritola Govt Model Primary School in ward 34 -- was suspended by the Election Commission on April 28, as the chief election commissioner (CEC) claimed that the situation in those centres went out of their control on that day.

During a visit, no BNP men were seen in the first two centres except in Suritola.

According to presiding officers, 62.47 percent votes were cast in Suritola, 20.16 percent in Jurain, and 29.56 percent in Kamalapur.

Voting in these centres was for the post of only general councillor because the number of voters did not influence the results of mayor and reserved women councillor candidates, said EC officials.

No incident of violence was reported, and additional law enforcers were deployed to maintain law and order.
