Bangladeshi ship with 22 crew released from Guinea
A Bangladeshi ship and its 22 crew were released yesterday after being detained for around eight months at Conakry port in Guinea with its rice cargo.
After being freed through a diplomatic channel, MV Dahiatul Kalbi with the crew started heading towards Bangladesh, its manager Capt Matiul told The Daily Star last night.
The vessel had been in the African country as charterers filed lawsuits with a local court saying that the rice got damaged due to the late arrival of the ship.
Losing the legal battle, the ship's owner and the Department of Shipping in Bangladesh sought the foreign ministry's assistance in this regard. The ship was loaded with rice from Kakinada port and steel coils from Paradip port in India last year. It sailed out of India on July 22 and reached Conakry port on October 30.
