BCL infighting in Chittagong College intensifying
Some 50 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) Chittagong Government College unit kept the college road blocked for nearly half an hour at Chawkbazar in Chittagong city yesterday afternoon, following a clash between two factions of BCL at the college.
The activists, who are loyal to BCL's city unit general secretary Nurul Azim Rony, alleged that the police were not taking action against those who, led by city Jubo League leader Tinu, attacked them over a scuffle.
Currently, the pro-Awami League (AL) student organisation does not have any committee at the college. And the activists are divided into two factions-- one is loyal to general secretary of AL's city unit AJM Nasir and Tinu, and the other to the unit's president Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Nurul Azim Rony, general secretary of city unit of BCL.
According to witnesses and students, a scuffle ensued between the two factions in the morning when Tinu along with some of his followers entered the college campus. Rony and his loyalists asked police to drive them out of the campus, claiming that they were outsiders and not students of the college.
At one stage, Tinu's followers beat three of Rony's group, alleged Rony's follower Mahmudul Karim, adding that police despite being informed of the incident did not take any action against Tinu and his activists.
Earlier, Mahmudul and some others of Rony's group beat up Tinu's supporter Shihab Uddin, a third year student of English department, who later filed a general diary with Chawkbazar police in this regard, said Aziz Ahmed, officer-in-charge of the police station.
For this reason, the Tinu-led group might have beaten those of Rony's group, added Aziz.
The OC, however, denied the allegation of indifference and not taking action against the accused.
