Expressing concern over the safety of its leaders and activists inside jails, BNP yesterday demanded that the government ensure sufficient security measures in this regard.

A convicted murderer attacked Habiganj municipality mayor Golam Kibria Gaus, an accused in the former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria murder case, with a knife inside a Habiganj jail on July 18 as per the jailer.

"Attack on the BNP leader inside the Habiganj jail spread panic among other BNP men behind bars," Spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon told a press conference at the party's Naya Paltan central office in the capital.

Ripon, also the foreign affairs secretary, welcomed newly appointed Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam's pledge on Monday to make the administration neutral and efficient.

He observed that there was no difference between Ashraful and BNP as both want public servants to stay away from politics.
