BNP demands UN probe to indentify arsonists

BNP yesterday demanded an investigation under the United Nations' supervision to identify persons responsible for subversive activities, including arson, during the party's three-month-long anti-government movement from January 6.

"The government is alleging that the BNP carried out the arson attacks while BNP is claiming that its party leaders and activists are not involved," BNP spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon told a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office.

"If they try to destroy the opposition or its top leaders without conducting an international investigation, it would negatively affect democracy," he warned.

On Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam's removal from the LGRD ministry, Ripon said, "This is an internal issue of the government. But the government should make it clear to the people why Syed Ashraf has been removed."
