Burn unit workers continue demo
Workers at Burn and Plastic Surgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital today continued their sit-in programme and work abstention for the second consecutive day today.
They staged the sit-in from 11:00am to 12:30pm in front of the office of Dr Samanta Lal Sen, chief coordinator of the institute, on demands of permanent employment.
Although, they are not officially recruited by the DMCH authority, they have been working at the unit as there are no fourth class employee there.
Due to their work abstention, more than 50 patients missed out their regular dressing up of the injuries, Dr Partha Shankar Paul, a resident surgeon of the unit, told The Daily Star.
"The workers are our service providers, without them our work becomes very difficult," he added.
Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, Jiban Miah, one of the workers, said he has been working there since 2007 without salary in hope of securing the job.
“We have been working here for 10-15 years in this way, but no step has been taken to officially recruit us or give us permanent employment along with salary. We cannot keep working like this anymore,” he said.
Dr Samanta Lal Sen yesterday said the workers’ demands are logical. “We are trying to regularise the workers but the authorities are yet to respond in this regard.”
