Crime reporter Moazzem Hossain Nannu severely burnt
Senior journalist Moazzem Hossain Nannu sustained severe burn injuries in a fire at his home in Dhaka's Aftabnagar area early today.
The incident took place five months after his son died in a blaze at the same house.
The chief of crime beat of the Daily Jugantor has been admitted to the intensive care unit of Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in a critical condition following the incident, said Partha Sanker Paul, a resident surgeon of the Institute.
The former general secretary of Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh sustained 60 percent burn injuries, the doctor added.
Nannu's wife Pallabi said he went to their son's room around 3am and opened the door.
"As soon as he switched on the light of the room, the fire broke out with a loud bang," she said adding that Nannu rushed to the bathroom and stood under the shower to save himself, but he was still severely burnt.
Ershad Hossain, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters suspected that the blaze started as accumulated gas in the room came in contact with an electrical spark.
The fire was doused before their two units reached there, he said.
Earlier on January 2, Nannu's son Swapnil Ahmed Piash, 24, died after a fire broke out in the same room due to accumulated gas inside.
