The Election Commission (EC) has asked the Satkhira superintendent of police and officers-in-charge (OC) of five police stations of the district to appear before it tomorrow to give statements about the irregularities that took place in the recent Union Parishad (UP) polls.

The Ballot boxes were stuffed in 14 polling stations in Satkhira at night, few hours prior to voting, which started on March 22 in the first phase of UP polls, the EC alleged.

EC suspended voting to the polling stations and asked the presiding officers to sue the candidates whose supporters stuffed the boxes. The EC also asked police authorities to suspend the on duty cops for "failing to discharge duties".

The police stations are Satkhira Sadar, Tala, Shyamnagar, Kalaroa and Debhata, said EC officials.

Meanwhile, electoral campaign for the second phase of UP polls will end tonight at 11:59pm. Around 650 UPs will go to poll on March 31 in the second phase.
