Ex-BCL man assaults CU journo
A journalist was allegedly assaulted by a former Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) Chittagong University (CU) unit sports secretary right in front of an assistant proctor on Friday night.
Joy Das is a second-year student of communication and journalism department and CU correspondent of online news portal Crime News. He claimed that Md Mamun repeatedly punched and slapped him in front of Assistant Proctor Liton Mitra after the latter took him to Zero Point Police Outpost from in front of Alaol Hall, where he had gone around 10:00pm hearing commotion among BCL activists.
Joy told The Daily Star that the assistant proctor did nothing and told him to leave. Then, some BCL activists again assaulted him at No 1 gate area, he alleged.
The assistant proctor said it was a single slap and that he had stopped Mamun. Initially he also claimed that he was talking to Joy over his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir. Later, the assistant proctor changed the statement, saying he was only taking Joy away from the commotion as BCL activists "could have assaulted him, branding him a Shibir activist".
He said the proctor has been informed and steps "would soon be taken" against the accused. CU Journalists Association submitted a written complaint with the proctor's office.
Mamun did not receive calls on his cellphone. CU BCL President Alamgir Tipu admitted that BCL activists beat Joy, saying it might have been on suspicion that he was a Shibir activist.
