Gazipur mayor arrested in violence case

Law enforcers arrested Gazipur City Corporation Mayor MA Mannan in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur last night, reports UNB.

The officer-in-charge of Joydevpur Police Station said Mannan was arrested in a violence case.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir denounced the arrest of Mannan.

In a statement, Fakhrul said Mannan's arrest while he is on bail and after the court stayed his suspension order as the mayor is nothing but brutality of the government.

Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhrul yesterday urged the government as well as the people to come forward to establish the politics of harmony instead of revenge, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.

He made the call at a reception accorded to him in his hometown in Thakurgaon last evening.

The district unit of BNP organised the programme at Thakurgaon Government Boys' High School as he was made the party's secretary general recently.

He also urged the people to maintain communal harmony.

Presently the freedom of speech is at stake in the country, Mirza Fakhrul said, adding that police open fire if people take to the streets protesting anomalies.
