Gonojagoron Mancha demands removal of finance minister
The Imran H Sarker-led faction of Gonojagoron Mancha brought out a rally at the capital's Shahbagh intersection yesterday afternoon, demanding a removal of Finance Minister AMA Muhith from the ministry for "his failure" to save the money recently embezzled from a Bangladesh Bank account with Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
"Ensure exemplary punishment for those involved in looting of the money so that nobody dares to commit such crimes again, and oust the finance minister since he tried to save the looters rather than the money," Imran urged the prime minister, demanding an appointment of a responsible, honest and patriotic person to the position.
Slain blogger Rajib's father, Dr Nazim Uddin demanded strong security measures to safeguard the money kept in the financial institutions including BB, against further lootings.
"The rulers turn the thieves to robbers by appreciating their misdeeds," alleged Imran and lambasted the appointment of the central bank's new governor Fazle Kabir, who was the former chairman of state-owned Sonali Bank and secretary to the finance division.
"Kabir has been appointed to the post of governor to cover up the looting, just as he did before," said Imran.
Later, the Mancha activists brought out a protest procession to press home their demands.
