Govt appeals against Fakhrul's bail

The government yesterday filed three appeals with the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the High Court order that granted bail to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three vandalism and arson cases.

After a brief hearing, Chamber Judge of SC's Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foez Siddique sent the appeals to its full bench for a hearing on November 30.

Fakhrul's lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told The Daily Star that Fakhrul may not get released from jail before that day.

Following three bail petitions, the HC on November 24 granted bail to Fakhrul for three months in the cases filed for vandalising and torching vehicles in the capital on January 4, 5 and 6.

On November 2, the SC ordered Fakhrul to surrender before a lower court after hearing three separate petitions lodged by Fakhrul seeking an extension of its order that granted him bail in the cases. Fakhrul was sent to jail after he surrendered to a Dhaka court on November 3.

The BNP leader was first sent to jail on May 16, 2012 after surrendering before another Dhaka court in a case filed for torching a vehicle in front of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on April 29 that year.

Additional Attorney General Momtaz Uddin Fakir appeared for the government.
