Man held with gold worth Tk 1.43cr in Ctg

Police early yesterday arrested an alleged member of a gold smuggling ring with 14 gold bars weighing 2.582 kilogrammes from Station Road area of the port city.

The arrestee is identified as Uttam Sen (35), said police.

A team of police led by Sub-inspector (probationary) Md Abdullah intercepted Uttam, noticing his suspicious movement. After searching him, law enforcers found the gold bars, said Officer-in-Charge Mohammed Mohsin of Kotwali Police Station.

The gold bars are worth Tk 1.43 crore, Mohsin added.

OC Mohsin said Uttam was heading for Dhaka but police arrested him before he could board a train.

"During interrogation, he said one Sanjit Dhar, a gold trader of the city's Hazari Lane area, gave him the bars. We are looking for him," he added.

A case was filed with the police station in this connection.
