Manjur feels unsafe in Ctg after attack on Khaleda's car
Shocked at the attack on BNP chief Khaleda Zia's motorcade, the party-backed mayor aspirant in Chittagong M Manjur Alam yesterday expressed serious concerns over the safety of his campaigners and doubts about a free and fair election to the city corporations. Manjur said on one hand, the government was talking about conducting a fair election and, on the other, carrying out attacks on rival candidates' campaigns through the ruling party men.
Turning to the waterlogging problem, he said the implementation of the drainage master plan of 1995 would be his main task, if reelected. Other priorities include recovery of the dying and occupied canals.
Khaleda's adviser Mir Nasir Uddin, who joined the campaign, said the government was mad at BNP's soaring popularity, and hence the ruling party men attacked her motorcade.
BNP city Vice-president Shamsul Alam, Jubo Dal city Senior Vice-president Yasin Chowdhury Litan, and Mohila Dal city President Monwara Begum Moni also joined the campaign.
Manjur is expected to unveil the manifesto in a day or two.
His main rival and AL favourite AZM Nasir Uddin, who continued accusing Manjur of failing to end waterlogging, yesterday promised that he would not increase the holding tax and would not evict hawkers from anywhere without their rehabilitation.
AL city vice presidents Nurul Islam and Khorshed Alam Sujan joined his campaigners.
