A rally organised by a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Chittagong city demanding arrest of the murderers of Nasim Ahmed Sohel, a student of Premier University, Chittagong, was foiled after the organisers briefly clashed with each others yesterday.

The rally was scheduled as part of the continuous demonstration, organised by the faction, which is said to be loyal to Awami League leader and Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin.

Eye witnesses said when the rally was in progress at the Central Shaheed Minar, two groups started scuffling and hurling chairs at each others around 4:30pm.

The rally was foiled, they added.

Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station Jasim Uddin said when they reached the scene, the situation was normal.

"Eye witnesses said a scuffle between two groups of students went on for five to 10 minutes, and none was reported injured," said the OC.

The official declined to comment whether the rally was foiled. "When we reached the spot around 5:00pm, we saw the rally was finished and the chairs were in order."

The Daily Star called up at least two organisers but none was available to comment.

Sohel, an MBA student of the university and member of Chittagong city unit BCL, was stabbed to death on March 29, allegedly by rival BCL activists.
