President of Chittagong city unit of the Awami League ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury yesterday said the people of Bangladesh would not bow to militancy and imperialism.

He said a quarter had established a "base of militants" at some colleges in the city where they appointed staff and teachers and conducted training for militants.

The former mayor of Chittagong city was addressing a party rally at the city's Central Shaheed Minar marking the second anniversary of the AL-led government.  He urged AL leaders and activists to save the lives of people by playing a role in maintaining law and order.

General Secretary of AL's Chittagong city unit AJM Nasir Uddin, also the incumbent mayor, said BNP was trying for an undemocratic takeover by creating a situation like that in 1975.

He accused BNP of having connection with militancy. He said BNP leaders did not have a democratic mindset; if they did, they would have taken part in the parliament election, held January 5, 2014, instead of "perpetrating" violence.
