Rein in the limitless greed: ACC chief
Pointing out that corruption took place even during the pandemic, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairperson Iqbal Mahmood yesterday called upon people to rein in their limitless greed.
"To correct a society, a family needs to be rectified first. Children need to know the source of their parents' income," he said.
The ACC chairperson said this at a virtual discussion organised to mark International Anti-Corruption Day. This year, the theme of the day was "Recover with Integrity".
He expressed his satisfaction over 63 percent punishment rate in graft cases. "We need to know why we could not ensure punishment for 37 percent of the cases," he added.
ACC Commissioner Dr Mozammel Haque Khan said all kinds of corruption need to be given emphasis equally.
"We need to show zero tolerance against corruption," he added.
ACC Commissioner AFM Aminul Islam said corruption is a social disease. "Without social awareness and commitment, it is not possible to prevent corruption."
"We need to work with integrity to recover from whatever damages the pandemic has caused," he added.
"It is not possible to prevent corruption by a single organisation. We need to change our mentality," said the ACC Commissioner.
Earlier, Reporters Against Corruption, a forum of journalists covering ACC beat, formed a human chain in front of ACC's Segunbagicha headquarters.
Addressing the human chain programme, ACC's secretary Dilwar Bakth said ACC Act will be revised, if necessary, to ensure punishment of corrupt people.
"ACC has always been vocal in ensuring punishment of corrupt people," he said.
