With the aim to provide safe drinking water to RMG workers, two water booths were installed in two garment workers' residential communities in Chattogram and Gazipur last month.

The first booth, "Reshmi Drinking Water", was installed in the Chattogram Export Processing Zone area, while the second one, "Shuddho Drinking Water", was launched in Gazipur's Lakkhipura, said a press release issued on Saturday.

The booths were launched as part of a project named "Shujola", implemented by Swisscontact Bangladesh. Both the booths can produce around 1,000 litres of safe drinking water per hour, which amounts to 8,000 litres of water for an eight-hour working day.

According to a baseline study, the daily water requirement of an RMG worker is two litres; each water booth can serve around 4,000 RMG workers on a regular working day, the release said.

In addition, the booth at Gazipur's Lakkhipura comes with ATM card facility, enabling local RMG workers and their community members to access their bank accounts when necessary.
