Road accidents kill five
Five persons were killed and six people injured in separate road accidents in four districts yesterday.
In Lalmonirhat, Rokeya Begum, 46, was killed and her two daughters seriously injured as a truck smashed a roadside house in Tusharbhandar area on Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway, reports our correspondent.
The injured girls were rescued and sent to a local hospital, said Officer-in-Charge Sajjad Hossain of Kaliganj Police Station.
The accident took place when the driver of the Burimari-bound truck lost control over the vehicle and hit the roadside house, killing the woman, and leaving two people injured, police said.
The driver and helper of the truck was arrested and the vehicle was seized.
In Tangail, Shamima Akter Bithi, 18, a first year student of Atia Women’s College, died in a collision between two CNG-run auto-rickshaws on Tangail-Nagpur road under Delduar upazila, reports our correspondent.
The accident took place in Atia Mazar Gate area, leaving Shamima dead on the spot, said Saidul Haque Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Delduar Police Station. Two other persons were also injured in the incident, the OC said.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Tangail General Hospital for autopsy. The two injured were also admitted to the same hospital for treatment.
After the accident, Shamima’s friends and other students of the college blocked the Tangail-Nagarpur road for an hour protesting the accident, the OC added.
In another incident in Rajshahi, Mohon, 28, and his cousin Rashedul, 23, died on the spot and another was injured when a lorry carrying them plunged into a pond beside the Naogaon-Rajshahi regional highway in Mohonpur upazila, reports our correspondent.
The accident took place when the driver of the Kushtia-bound lorry lost control on the steering, said Abul Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohonpur Police Station.
The injured identified as Shafikul, 22, was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), the police official added.
Police seized the vehicle while its driver and the helper were absconding.
Meanwhile in Chattogram, motorcyclist Md Azad, 30, died and his co-rider was injured as a bus collided head-on with the motorcycle in Bahaddarhat area of the port city, reports our correspondent.
The co-rider, Md Imran, 27, was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) with critical injuries, said Assistant Sub-inspector Alauddin Talukder of CMCH Police Camp.
The accident took place at 9am when the motorcycle collided head-on with a Cox’s Bazar bound-bus, leaving the two critically injured.
They were rushed to CMCH where Azad was declared dead, ASI Alauddin added.
