Road accidents kill four in the capital
At least four people, including two students, were killed and three injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka in the last two days.
The deceased were identified as Sultan Rony (22), a student of Dhaka College; Rahim Mia (10), a first-grader; Sharifa Begum, a temporary cleaner of Dhaka North City Corporation; and Mohammad Masud (40), a tow truck driver of police.
Rony along with his two friends were heading towards Signboard area via Mayor Hanif Flyover on a motorbike yesterday.
On their way, the bike skidded off the road around 5am, leaving the trio injured, said Rony's father Abdur Rahim, quoting the injured.
They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Rony dead. His friends -- Shaheen (22) and Nayeem (22) -- were receiving treatment at the hospital, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost.
In another accident in Kamrangirchar, Rahim sustained critical injuries after being hit by a microbus when he went out of the house in Khalpar area. He was rushed to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead around 8:30am, said Rahim's father Mohon Chan.
Police seized the microbus and detained its driver.
In Khilkhet area, Sharifa died instantly after an unidentified vehicle hit her while she was working around 5:30am yesterday, said Sub-inspector Shamsul Haque of Khilkhet Police Station.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to DMCH morgue for autopsy. Police are trying to identify the vehicle, he said.
Meanwhile, tow truck driver Masud sustained injuries after another truck hit his vehicle while he was trying to remove a covered-van seized by police under Hanif flyover in Jatrabari around 11pm on Wednesday.
He was declared dead by DMCH doctors. One Khaled, who also sustained injuries in the accident, was undergoing treatment there.
Hailing from Barishal, Masud used to live with his family in Shanir Akhra.
Inspector Bachchu Mia said the bodies were kept at the hospital's morgue for autopsy.
Our Pabna correspondent reports, an official of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation was killed while his fellow superintendent engineer and a BADC driver was injured as their official vehicle hit a roadside tree in Shahzadpur area of Sirajganj yesterday morning.
The deceased were identified as Sazzad Hossain, executive director of BADC, Pabna.
The injured -- ABM Mahamud Hossain, superintendent engineer of BADC; and Md. Saidul Islam, the driver -- were taken to Khwaza Eunus Ali Medical College and Hospital.
The accident happened as the driver lost control over the vehicle while they were going to join a meeting in Dhaka, said Shahzadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahed Mahamud Khan.
Our Thakurgaon correspondent adds, a motorcyclist was killed and three others were injured in a collision between his bike and another on Tentulia-Panchagarh highway at Goalgoch village in Tentulia upazila in Panchagarh early yesterday.
The victim was identified as Anisur Rahman (26) from Chutchutia village in the same upazila.
The injured -- Nawshad (30), Sajib (14), and Abu Sayed (20) from the same upazila -- were taken to Tentulia Upazila Health Complex.
