Road accidents take seven lives

Seven people were killed and five persons injured in road accidents in three districts during the last two days, according to reports from our local correspondents.

In Cumilla, four people were killed and five injured as a truck collided head-on with a human haulier on Cumilla-Sylhet highway in Horindhora of Mainamati under Burichang upazila yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Billal Hossain Bhuiyan (35), his sister Ripa Akhter (40), Sadhon Chandra Saha and Sazid, said Safayet Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mainamati Crossing Highway Police Station.

The OC said three of the victims -- who were the human haulier passengers -- died on the spot and the woman was declared dead at a local hospital.

The injured others were taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

In Rangpur, a girl and her uncle were killed as an oncoming truck hit a motorbike they were riding at Shathibari in Mithapukur upazila yesterday.

Jui Akter (10) from Hajaratpur-Dublachari village in Mithapukur died on the spot and her uncle Lablu Mia (35) succumbed to his injuries on way to a hospital, said police.

Jui was a third-grader while Lablu a deed writer.

The truck driver fled the spot with the vehicle.

In Panchagarh, a farm labourer was killed after a truck hit a bicycle he was riding on Panchagarh-Tunirhat road at Fulbarpara village in Sadar upazila on Saturday night.

The victim -- Lulu Mia (40) from the village -- died instantly, said police.  After the accident, police seized the truck and detained the driver's helper Yasin Ali after locals handed him over to them.
