Road crashes kill 11, injure 9

At least 11 people were killed and nine injured in road accidents across the country in the last two days, our correspondents, and news agencies report. 

In Cumilla, three people were killed after a speeding bus ran over the motorbike carrying them at Uttar Rampur area in Cumilla Sadar South upazila yesterday.

The deceased are Sajal, 24; Shahin, 24; and Kajol, 25.

Police, quoting locals, said the incident occurred when the bus of Shyamoli Paribahan was taking a U-turn while being on the wrong side of the road.

Police seized the bus and detained its driver Hamidul Islam. Bodies of the deceased were sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

In Chattogram, two people were killed in separate  accidents in Karnaphuli and Sitakunda upazilas yesterday.

In Karnaphuli, Muzammel Haque, 28, a garment worker, was killed on the spot when an unidentified vehicle hit him while he was waiting for a bus around 12:30am at Karnaphuli Bus Stand area, said police, quoting locals.

In Sitakunda, a truck hit Dulal Chandra Shil, 49, while he was crossing the road around 2pm at Batiali area, they added.

Locals took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

In Kishoreganj, tenth-grader Ridoy Hossain, 18, was killed and his friend Romon Mia, 18, was injured when a bus collided with the motorbike carrying them at Maizhati Pulerghat area in Pakundia upazila around 7am yesterday.

Quoting locals, police said after the accident, both Ridoy and Romon were critically injured.

They were rushed to Kishoreganj General Hospital where doctors declared Ridoy dead. The body was sent to the morgue for autopsy.

Romon was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Police seized the bus but its driver managed to flee. A case was lodged.

In Gopalganj, Parvez Sheikh, 30, a pick-up van driver, was killed and five were injured when a bus collided with his van at Dattadanga area in Sadar upazila around 8am yesterday.

Quoting locals, police said after the accident, six people, including Parvez, were injured. Locals took them to Gopalganj General Hospital where Parvez died under treatment.

Police seized both the vehicles, but the bus driver fled the scene.

In the capital, Ahsan Gazi, 50, a construction worker, was killed when a truck ran him over in Mirpur area yesterday, said police.

The accident occurred when Gazi along with other workers was digging the ground beside an under-construction building.

Critically injured Ahsan was first taken to a local hospital and was then transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

His body was kept in the morgue for autopsy.

In Munshiganj, Tazul Islam, 75, was killed when a bus ran him over at Baluakandi area in Gazaria upazila yesterday, said police, quoting locals.

The accident occurred while Tazul was crossing the road, killing him on the spot, they added.

Police seized the vehicle and detained its driver.

In Magura, Anjoly Biswas, 45, was killed and three others were injured when a bus hit the battery-run auto-rickshaw carrying them at Baliadanga area in Sadar upazila around 2:30pm yesterday, said police.

The injured were admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital.

In Pirojpur, Md Mojahar Hossain Howlader, 60, was killed when a motorbike driven by a police officer hit him in Nazirpur upazila on Saturday, said police.

Witnesses said two officers were travelling on the motorbike. When they reached in front of Patilakhali Government Primary School, they hit Mojahar while he was walking on the road, injuring him critically.

Locals and the officers took Mojahar to a nearby health complex where he died under treatment.

Later, deceased’s son Shahidul Islam filed a case with Nazirpur Police Station, accusing Constable Sakil, who was driving the motorbike, said police.
