Sale of low quality OMS rice protested

Protesting distribution of low quality rice under the open market sale (OMS) programme, low-income people of ward 10 and 11 of Thakrugaon municipality formed a human chain yesterday in Railway Station Bazar area.

It was followed by a discussion where speakers said the dealers were selling low quality rice since last week. 

"I could not buy rice because of smell and quality," said Md Aslam of Islamnagar.

Belal Hossain, an easy-bike driver of the station area, said survival will be hard, if such rice were sold regularly.

Abdul Latif, OMS dealer for Ward-10, said they distribute good quality rice and he was not aware how the adulterated rice had been sold.

"If anyone sold our supplied rice in black market, and then the low quality one to the people, actions will be taken against them," said Md Abdullah Arefin, in-charge of Ruhea Local Supply Depot.

Food department has appointed 24 dealers in Thakurgaon municipality for selling rice at Tk 15 for the low-income people.
