Nandail upazila administration in Mymensingh imposed section 144 last night after two groups of the Awami League announced holding rallies simultaneously allegedly centring the formation of the party's upazila unit.

A 62-member committee with lawmaker Anwarul Abedin Tuhin as the convener and approved by the AL's district unit was announced on November 21, said the party sources. However, AL's central committee stopped its activities yesterday, they added.

Tuhin's supporters announced holding a reception for the committee at the Shaheed Smriti Adarsha College field today at 11:00am, Nandail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ataur Rahman told The Daily Star.

Supporters of the district AL President Maj Gen (retd) Abdus Salam brought out a procession yesterday protesting the committee and announcing to hold another rally simultaneously at Old Bus Stand area, some 500 yards away, he added.

The OC said the situation was under control.

Section 144 prohibits assembly of five or more persons, holding of public meetings, and carrying of firearms and can be invoked for up to two months.
