Staff Correspondent

A section of journalists yesterday submitted a memorandum to the office of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, seeking his (CJ) interference for the release of senior journalists Shawkat Mahmud and Mahmudur Rahman from jail.

The journalists led by Ruhul Amin Gazi and M Abdullah handed over the memorandum to Mohammad Anisur Rahman, personal secretary of Sinha, for forwarding it to the chief justice.

Citing from the memorandum, they told reporters at the Supreme Court Bar Association premises that  Shawkat Mahmud, president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), and Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of the daily Amar Desh, have been shown arrested in cases for several times when they got bail from the court in other cases.

Physical conditions of Shawkat and Mahmudur have become very bad, as they have been suffering from various diseases and languishing in jail for a long period, they added.

The CJ's PS Anisur Rahman told The Daily Star yesterday afternoon that he will place the memorandum to the chief justice soon.
