The High Court yesterday granted bail to BNP leaders Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in three cases for vandalism, arson and planning to commit subversive activities.

Shamsher got bail in two vandalism and arson cases and so there is no legal bar to his release from jail, his lawyer M Masud Rana told The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, Gayeshwar got bail in a case for planning to commit subversive activities, but he cannot be released from jail as he is shown arrested in two other cases, said his lawyer Nitai Roy Chowdhury.

Responding to three bail petitions filed by the two, the HC also issued separate rules asking the government to explain in four weeks why the accused petitioners should not be granted regular bail in the cases. The court granted them ad-interim bail till disposal of the rules.

Police filed the cases against Shamsher on December 24 last year on charges of vandalising and setting on fire the car of Netrakona-1 MP Chhabi Biswas and preventing law enforcers from discharging their duties at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Goyeshwar was accused by police on December 26 last year of planning subversive acts.
