Sylhet ASI withdrawn for assaulting youth

A policeman assaulted a youth and took his wallet in Sylhet yesterday.

Locals and witnesses said SD Emon, a youth of Dariapara area, came to Zindabazar on a rickshaw and he got into an altercation with ASI Masum Ahmed of traffic police, over parking the rickshaw.

The ASI then forcefully took the youth inside a nearby temple, physically assaulted him and took his wallet, said witnesses.

Meanwhile, locals blocked the road in the area for around one hour, protesting the incident.

They later withdrew the blockade, after getting assurance from senior police officials that action would be taken against the ASI.

“We have closed the accused officer, as we found the allegations to be primarily true. We will take further steps after investigation,” said Zedan Al Musa, deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

MAN ASSAULTED IN POLICE STATION IN BOGURA

In Bogura, a man was allegedly beaten up by cops inside a police station for hours since Thursday.

The victim is Md Sohan Babu, 32.

Talking to journalists, his father Saidur Rahman said Babu runs a micro-credit business with one Sathi Begum and his husband Bappi Mia.

Babu took a loan from Sathi, but was dilly-dallying in repaying it, prompting Sathi to file a complaint with Bogura Sadar Police Station, he said.

Babu was called to the police station on Thursday night around 11pm. He was handcuffed and confined to a room, and beaten up mercilessly with sticks, Saidur added.

Later, police released him after taking Tk 20,000 and signature on a blank paper from him on Friday, alleged the victim’s father.

Contacted, Arifur Rahman Mondal, acting superintendent of police (SP) of the district, said they have already suspended four personnel -- a sub-inspector, two assistant sub-inspectors and a constable -- following the allegation.

“We will conduct an inquiry against the alleged members. If we find the allegations to be true, we will take departmental action against them,” the SP added.
