Youths shoot BCL man after scuffle

A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist was shot after he beat up a local youth in Halishahar area of Chittagong city yesterday.

Imam Hossain Babu, 22, was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital with a bullet wound in the abdomen, said the hospital sources.

He is the son of Subedar Md Yousuf of Chittagong district police.

Witnesses and police said local youth Farhad was beating another youth named Yunus for allegedly stealing the mobile phone of one of Farhad's friends.

When Babu saw the incident, he took the side of Yunus and beat up Farhad, they said, adding that after Juma prayers Farhad arrived at the spot with a microbus full of youths and shot at Babu with a pipe gun. The attackers were chased away by locals.

Rony Mirza, a joint secretary of Chittagong city unit of BCL, said Babu was an active BCL worker and his follower.

Officer-in-Charge of Halishahar Syed Mohammed Ahsanul Islam said they were looking for the suspects.
