“State Power vs People's Power,” published on January 17, 2014

In British period, people used to loot police stations to create pressure on police (government's official terrorists) to stop working for the illegal/unethical government. Today we don't expect people would follow the same path but there are ways to create similar pressure on law enforcers to stop working for an illegal/illegitimate government like Sheikh Hasina's current one.

Many thanks for your excellent article. Hope you and people like you continue to write against this immoral and undemocratic government, as you said: “The only thing necessary for the evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

I thank Mr. Anam for this thought provoking piece. British parliament is known as womb of parliamentary form of democracy and surprisingly, the British parliament has recommended “Caretaker Government” for Bangladesh to conduct election. So what's wrong with the CTG system?

Shahid Imon
We are effectively in a one party system. The consequences: decline of institutions, mal-governance, social division, reversal of social sector development and slow economic growth. In a word, what we achieved in the past two decades will face a serious setback in years to come.

Thank You, Mr Anam, for your very bold and to the point article. But will Hasina listen to it? With this senseless politics, Hasina has pushed Bangladesh 25 years back.

Denial sometimes can be a form of arrogant cowardice. AL's denial of truth and reality is one such symptom. Putting a wrong right requires steely determination of a transparent kind. With the spotlight on, let's hope and pray that the PM rises above it all. The finger needs also to be pointed at the erstwhile opposition leader from a completely different perspective. She actively and naively contributed to this current state of affairs. A quiet introspection may help her to overcome her shortcomings and see the futility of her party's approach thus far.

Great analysis Mahfuz Anam! I think AL's advisors and PM's close quarters will bring to her attention the ominous future her government is headed (devoid of the public's participation) and persuade the PM to reverse her current political strategy. No doubt, absolute power will corrupt absolutely. Perhaps frequent write-ups along this line will make enough impact on the minds of her policy wonks to think about the people and not about a handful of AL members.

A very good read, thank you Mr. Anam. I sincerely hope our PM understands the pulse of the nation.
