100 BNP-Jamaat men among 143 arrested

Hundred BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men among 143 people were held in Chittagong, Chapainawabganj, Jhenidah and Satkhira districts yesterday and the day before.

Police in separate drives arrested 60 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir in two upazilas of Chittagong early yesterday, reports our correspondent.

Of them, 49 are from Satkania upazila and 11 others from Lohagara upazila, reports our correspondent.

They were arrested in several cases, said police.

In Chapainawabganj, at least 42 people, including 17 BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men were held in different upazilas of the district in the last two days.

Police also seized three cocktails and some jihadi books from the possession of Jamaat-Shibir men, reports our correspondent.

The arrestees include Md Kamaluddin, treasurer of Bholahat upazila unit of BNP, and Mosharraf Hossain, secretary of Nachole upazila unit of Jamaat.

Away in Jhenidah, police arrested 10 BNP-Jamaat activists in six upazilas of the district yesterday and the day before.

OF them, three are from Sadar upazila, three from Kotchandpur upazila, one from Shailakupa, one from Harinakundo, one from Kaliganj and one from Moheshpur upazila.

They were arrested on charge of planning subversive activities in the areas, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Ajbahar Ali Sheikh.

In Satkhira, the law enforcers in separate drives arrested 31 people, including 13 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-Shibir from different parts of the district in the last two days, reports UNB.

Enamul Haque, sub-inspector of the Special Branch, said a team of joint forces conducted separate drives in the district and arrested 10 people from Sadar upazila, four from Kalaroa, three from Tala, two  from Kaliganj, four from Ashashuni, three from Debhata and Shyamnagar upazilas, two from Patkelghata upazila.

Of the arrestees, 12 were Jamaat-Shibir men while another was an activist of BNP, said Enamul Haque.
