11 get life for murder
A Rajshahi court yesterday sentenced 11 people to life term imprisonment for killing an activist of local Awami League in Natore district last year.
The lifers are Faridul Islam Paltu, Abdul Karim, Moyen Uddin, Md Taleb, Md Shamsul Islam, Rajiul Hasan Ripon, Md Ali, Mohammad Nazim, Nayan Hossain, Ibrahim Khalil Fatik, organising secretary of Singra upazila unit of BNP, and Alamgir Hossain. Shamsul and Alamgir are still at large.
Judge Golam Ahmed Khalilur Rahman of Speedy Trial Tribunal also fined them Tk 5,000 each. In default, they are to suffer another one year in jail.
According to the prosecution, a gang stabbed member of Singra upazila unit of AL Fazlar Rahman Fonu, 59, chairman of Kolom Union Parishad, to death while he was returning to his area from the town with his nephew in a motorbike on January 18, 2014.
Victim's younger brother Mainul Haque Fonu filed a murder case, accusing 18 people in this connection.
The judge handed down the verdict, acquitting seven other accused.
