2 held in Jamalpur health worker murder case

Police arrested two accused in health worker Aleya Begum murder case from CNG-run-auto-rickshaw stand in the district town on Monday.

The arrestees are Syed Mostak Ahmed, 38, son of Syed Faruk Ahmed, and his wife Sathi Akhter, 27, of Notarkanda area in Islampur municipality of the district.

Aleya Begum, health worker of Melandah Upazila Health Complex in the district, was killed by criminals at her residence at Dakkhin Kacharipara in the town early Sunday.

A gang entered the house breaking the lock of the collapsible gate open and strangled Aleya. They also took away Tk 2.5lakh, 25 tolas of gold ornaments and a laptop.

The following day, Aleya's elder daughter Jemi Akhter filed a murder case against Mostak and his wife Sathi who hired a tin shed house belonging to the victim seven months ago, said Md Sadek, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station.    

After filing of the case, the couple left the house and tried to escape but police managed to arrest the duo from the area on Monday night, said the SI, investigation officer (IO) of the case.

During primary interrogation, the couple confessed that they killed Aleya with 3/4 criminals and looted the cash, gold ornaments and laptop.

As per their statement, police recovered five tolas of looted gold ornaments and the laptop from Mostak Jarda Store run by arrestee Mostak in Islampur upazila town yesterday, the IO said, adding that police are raiding different areas to arrest other culprits.

The Judicial Magistrate Court granted a two-day remand against the arrestees when they were produced before the court, seeking a seven-day remand, said Abida Khan, court inspector.
