53 Jamaat-Shibir men among 69 held in four districts

At least 69 people including 53 Jamaat-Shibir men were held in Jhenidah, Chandpur, Satkhira and Mymensingh districts yesterday and the day before.

A team of joint force in separate drives arrested 37 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami in six upazilas of Jhenidah in the last two days, reports our correspondent.

Of them, 11 are from Sadar, six from Shailakupa, 12 from Moheshpur, one from Harinakundo, four from Kaliganj and three from Kotchandpur upazilas.

They were arrested on charge of planning subversive activities in the areas, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Ajbahar Ali Sheikh.

In Chandpur, seven activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir were held during a special drive by the law enforcers at a mess in Mominpara area of the district town on Saturday evening, reports UNB.

The arrestees are Sabbir Hossain, Mohammad Farhaduzzaman, Mohammad Yunus, Mohammad Uzzal, Abdus Salam, Mohammad Bahar Elahi and Rubel.

On secret information, a police team led by Masud Shamim, sub-inspector of Chandpur Model Police Station, raided the mess in the area around 7:00pm and arrested the Shibir men.

They were arrested in several cases, said police.

Away in Satkhira, a joint force arrested 21 people, including five activists of Jamaat-Shibir, from different places of the district yesterday and the day before, reports UNB.

Enamul Haque, sub-inspector of Special Branch, Satkhira said a team of joint force, comprising police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh, conducted separate drives in six upazilas of the district and arrested the 21, including four Jamaat and one Shibir men, on various charges.

Police said the Jamaat-Shibir men were arrested on sabotage charges.

Among the arrestees, 10 are from Sadar, two each from Kalaroa and Debhata, three each from Kaliganj and Ashashuni, and one from Patkelghata upazila.

In Mymensingh, Detective Branch of police arrested four Jamaat-Shibir men on charge of planning arson attacks at Gushtha village in Sadar upazila of the district Saturday night, reports our correspondent.

They are Akhtar Hossain, 48, Haluaghat upazila Jamaat nayeb-e-ameer, his son Abu khayer Mohammad Abdullah alias Khayer Munshi, Oliullah Mujaheed, 24, Shibir activist, and Ataullah Galib, 18, secretary of Dapunia union unit of Shibir.
