Accused Baufal OC transferred
Authorities have transferred Baufal Police Station officer in charge Noresh Chandra Karmaker, who was allegedly involved in the brutal torture on Bangla daily Prothom Alo's Baufal correspondent ABM Mizanur Rahman in the police custody on March 17.
Journalists across the country protested the incident and different press clubs across the country held rallies, formed human chains, and submitted memorandums demanding punishment of the perpetrators.
Naresh, who had been serving in Baufal as OC since November 21 in 2012,
was transferred to a police station in Barisal district on Wednesday, said HM Azimul Haque, additional superintendent of police of Patuakhali.
Police arrested Mizanur from Kalaiya Bazar area around 8:00pm on March 17 and Halim, ASI of Baufal Police Station, filed a case against Mizanur on charge of assaulting him the same night.
Mizanur alleged that policemen including OC Noresh Chandra Karmaker tortured him physically and mentally in their custody.
At one stage, Mizanur lost consciousness and police took him to Baufal Upazila Health Complex that night. But they brought him back to the police station without any treatment, as a few local journalists were present at the hospital.
The following day, police produced Mizanur before the Baufal Upazila Judicial Magistrate's Court that sent him to jail. He is still detained there.
Meanwhile, the High Court (HC) on March 22 asked the government and the police to show cause in two weeks as to why the law enforcers responsible for torturing Mizan should not be punished.
In its ruling, which came following a writ petition by Mizanur's father Abdus Salam, the HC ordered the government and the police to explain why inhuman physical and mental torture on the journalist in police custody should not be declared illegal.
