Jamalpur district unit of Awami League (AL) expelled a leader of Sarishabari upazila unit of the party on charge of his involvement in looting Tk 10 lakh and a motorbike belonging to  the chairman of Pigna Union Parishad under the upazila on Monday night.

The expelled leader is Khurshed Alam, organising secretary of AL upazila unit.

Party sources said Khurshed and his 10/12 cohorts asked UP chairman Motahar Hossain to give them Tk 2.5 lakh from the funds allocated for employment-opportunity scheme (karma-srijan prokalpa) for the poor labourers.

As Motahar refused, Khurshed and his men assaulted him and snatched the money and the motorbike from him around 1:30pm on the UNO office premises.

Motahar filed a case in the evening against Khurshed and his men with Sarishabari Police Station, police said.

Police arrested one Rajib on charge of being involved in the incident, said Billal Uddin, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Baki Billah, president of the district unit AL, said Khurshed was expelled from the party over the issue.
